24 Hours From Tulsa. Pitney had the perfect voice for the three-minute soap opera. As well as inspiring Bacharach and David he created his own vivid slices of life:
He's A Rebel, Rubber Ball, Today's Teardrops, Hello Mary Lou. He appeared on
Ready Steady Go! and hung out with Phil Spector, Marianne Faithfull and the Stones. The British Invasion ended his career in the US, but when the hits stopped happening he worked hard at showmanship, touring in Europe while the composer royalties rolled in at home. He died in mid-tour after a performance popularly judged to be his best ever, and you can't really have a better rock 'n roll death than that.
